Professor Staniland is Professor Emeritus at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, a Professor of Maritime Law at the University of Southampton, an Adjunct Professor at the World Maritime University and a Visiting Professor of Maritime Law at the University of Greenwich. Professor Staniland was formerly Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the South African Maritime Safety Authority, Head of the School of Maritime Studies at the University of Natal and former Director of the Institute of Maritime Law at the University of Southampton. Professor Staniland is an advocate of the High Court of South Africa and of the High Court of Lesotho. He also sits as a judge from time to time on courts of marine inquiry in different jurisdictions dealing with the loss of lives and ships. He is active in the reform of maritime law and policy and is drafting shipping legislation for different maritime states around the world in both common law and civil law jurisdictions.
