Hilton Staniland is an Emeritus Professor of Maritime Law. He is an advocate of the High Court of South Africa and of the High Court of Lesotho. Professor Staniland is very active in the reform of maritime law and policy and has drafted shipping legislation for many different maritime states around the world, including both common law and civil law jurisdictions. Professor Staniland is also very active in casualty investigations and sits from time to time on courts of marine inquiry in different jurisdictions dealing with the loss of lives and ships.
Professor Staniland was formerly Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the South African Maritime Safety Authority and Director of the Institute of Maritime Law at the University of Southampton.
