Greece’s coast guard has detained a Bolivian-flagged general cargo ship found loaded with undeclared weapons bound for Libya.
The vessel was seized on 1 September near the port of Ierapetra on the south coast of Crete.
It was subsequently taken to the island’s capital Iraklion for inspection, where military equipment was found in containers onboard.
The Greek National Intelligence Service had received a tip off regarding a suspicious transportation moves south of Crete, which prompted the raid by special forces working with the coast guard.
AISLive charts show the vessel, which IHS Maritime has chosen not to name, left the Turkish port of Iskenderun on 27 August. It was due to arrive in the Libyan port of Misratah on 4 September.
There is currently an international embargo on arms shipments to Libya.
