At least 21 passengers were killed on the Nile north of Cairo when a cargo ship collided with a chartered party boat. Egyptian police say the passengers were celebrating an engagement when the accident occurred. According to reports, rescue teams were able to save five members of the party, but six are still missing. At least two of the missing persons are children. The collision happened overnight, and security sources say the rescue was hampered by darkness.
The cargo ship’s captain and crew were arrested following the incident, and are suspected of operating the ship without following proper safety precautions.
