The land reclamation project on some stationed islands and reefs of the Nansha islands (also known as the Spratly Islands) in the South China Sea will be completed in the upcoming days as planned, said Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lu Kang on 16 June.
“Apart from satisfying the need of necessary military defence, the main purpose of China’s construction activities is to meet various civilian demands and better perform China’s international obligations and responsibilities,” it was stated by the ministry.
The project will be able to play a role “in the areas such as maritime search and rescue, disaster prevention and mitigation, marine scientific research, meteorological observation, ecological environment conservation, navigation safety, as well as fishery production service”, said Lu in the statement.
After the land reclamation, the finish date of which has not been released, China will start the building of facilities to meet relevant functional requirements, said Lu.
