China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) has placed orders for eight 13,500 teu container ships at Shanghai Jiangnan Changxing Shipbuilding.
The total cost of the newbuilds amounted to USD934.4 million, a stock filing of CSCL said on 29 July. They are scheduled for delivery from April 2018 to December 2018.
The newbuilds will be deployed in the Asia-US East Coast trade routes, CSCL told IHS Maritime.

“The group positively responds to the development trend for large-scale container vessels in the shipping market, adheres to low-carbon environmental protection initiatives, and is committed to adjusting and optimising the structure of its fleet,” CSCL said.
“The vessel acquisition will further help optimise the group’s fleet structure, increase shipment scale, and enhance the group’s comprehensive competitiveness. According to the internal estimation and calculation, the vessel acquisition provides certain risk-resistance and is economically and technologically feasible,” CSCL added.
