The captain of a Malaysian-flagged LPG carrier that was thought to have gone missing on 10 June has clarified how the erroneous report arose.
Silverline Maritime-owned Teknogas had accidentally issued a distress signal at 02:30 h local time that day, as it sailed from Hai Phong, Vietnam to Palembang.
The tanker arrived safely at Palembang on 13 June.
In a statement to IHS Maritime, Jeyabalan, the captain, said all communication equipment were in the vessel’s small radio room.
His colleague, who was steering the tanker, pressed the distress button by accident, triggering a response from the authorities. He then replied to say he had accidentally pressed the distress button.
