The US Coast Guard and Seaway Development Corp are investigating the grounding on 20 April of the Juno, a 621ft bulk carrier operated by Polsteam, near the American section of the Thousand Islands Bridge in the St Lawrence River.
Shipping was halted in the area while officials from the coastguard and Seaway offices in Massena, New York, decided how to deal with the ship, the coastguard’s 9th District headquarters in Cleveland said in a statement. The ship was taking on water in a forward ballast tank and has developed a list to the port side. The bridge was not struck in the incident.
The Seaway Corp reported the grounding to the coastguard. No injuries or pollution were reported, the coastguard added.
The Bahamian-flagged bulk carrier was on its way to the Port of Toronto with a load of sugar.
Three Canadian freighters are waiting for the navigational channel to re-open and more vessels are expected.
