Israel’s Haifa port set a productivity record last week while servicing ZIM Los Angeles, an 8,200 teu fully cellular container vessel.
Six STS cranes at Haifa’s Carmel Container Terminal handled 318.8 containers per ship hour.
The port reported another record during the shift for containers moved by a single crane: 74.7 containers per hour.
Carmel Terminal’s cranes have averaged 30 containers per hour this year.
“Service excellence and high productivity are the cornerstones of this port’s future and we will only continue to improve in all areas,” said Mendi Zaltzman, CEO of Haifa Port.
The port plans to further enhance the Carmel Terminal’s infrastructure. Two additional STS cranes (20+1 lines) and three gantry cranes have already been ordered, according to a recent port press release.
Haifa handles most cargoes and offers a wide range of services at nine terminals, according to IHS Maritime’s Sea-web.
China’s Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) has recently inked a deal to run the port for 25 years from 2021.
