Port of Kobe’s cargo traffic rose 2% year on year in May to 7.821 million tonnes as a gain in domestic trade outweighed a dip in foreign trade.
Foreign trade slipped 4.2% y/y to 4.187 million tonnes but domestic trade at the west Japanese port climbed 10.3% y/y to 3.633 million tonnes, according to preliminary figures from Kobe’s municipal government.

In its foreign trade, the Port of Kobe’s exports rose 0.1% to 1.912 million tonnes of cargo, while imports sagged 7.5% to 2.275 million tonnes.
Container traffic totalled 1.123 million teu in January-May, up 4.2% from the same five-month period last year. Figures for May were not available.
Domestic trade climbed 6.8% y/y to 240,436 teu while foreign trade gained 3.5% y/y to 883,450 teu, with exports up 3.0% y/y to 467,892 teu and imports up 4.0% y/y to 415,558 teu.
