Seafarers’ Rights International has underlined its commitment to representing the needs of the world’s seafarers by appointing a new member to its influential Advisory Board.
Ravi K Mehrotra CBE, Founder and Executive Chairman of Foresight Ltd, London, is a major owner and manager of a variety of vessel types which over the years have included offshore drilling, reefer shipping, tankers and multi-purpose vessels.
A marine engineer by training, he held various senior positions at the Shipping Corporation of India before being seconded to Iran in 1975 to help set up a new government-to-government joint venture, the Irano Hind Shipping Company. After the Iranian Revolution in 1979, he was appointed Principal Advisor on Shipping, a position he held for 10 years.
Deidre Fitzpatrick, Executive Director of SRI, welcomed Mr Mehrotra’s appointment. She said: “SRI is all about looking after seafarers’ rights across all sides of the industry. Ravi’s experience in owning and management will bring invaluable input into both the workings of the advisory board and SRI. We are delighted to welcome him onto the board and look forward to his valuable contribution to our work.”
SRI is dedicated to improving the legal protection of seafarers worldwide. Established in September 2010, it uses high level research and analysis to raise awareness of the legal concerns of seafarers and improve the protection of seafarers under national and international laws. It has been funded by a start-up grant from the ITF Seafarers’ Trust Charity and is an independent organisation.
