Under the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (‘MLC’) a seafarer must:
- Be trained or certified as competent or otherwise qualified to perform his duties.
Have successfully completed training for personal safety on board ship.
Training and certification in accordance with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978, as amended, must be considered as meeting the requirements of the MLC.
The MLC does not require ships’ cooks to be certified. However, in 2013 an international meeting adopted the guidelines on the training of ships’ cooks which is available on the International Labour Organisation’s website, dealing with the MLC.
