The Port of Kobe in western Japan saw its cargo traffic increase 7.9% in June from a year earlier to more than 8 million tonnes, as domestic trade grew by double digits and foreign trade also rose solidly, according to preliminary figures released by the Kobe municipal government.
Of the 8.057 million tonnes handled, 4.291 million tonnes came from foreign trade, up 2.9% from a year earlier, and the remaining 3.765 million tonnes came from domestic trade, up 14.2% year on year (y/y).
During June, Kobe exported 1.951 million tonnes of cargo, up 5.2%, and imported 2.340 million tonnes of cargo, up 1.0%.
The port handled 1.350 million teu of containers between January and June, up 4.1% y/y. Figures for June were not available immediately.
Of the 1.350 million teu handled in the January-June period, 1.061 million teu came from foreign trade, up 3.5% y/y, and the remaining 289,242 teu came from domestic trade, up 6.3% y/y.
In foreign trade in the January-June period, 565,136 teu were exported, up 3.3% from a year earlier, and 496,179 teu were imported, up 3.7% y/y.
